About Me
Artist Bio
My name is Steven Wilensky and I currently reside in Madison, Wisconsin. My birthplace was New York City, and I lived in the New York Metropolitan area for all but the last nineteen years.
The medium I choose to work with is photography. I generally take landscapes, portraits, travel, and black and white photographs. After I have taken a series of photographs, I will proceed to choose those photos where I can do additional post processing to make them stand out and draw the attention of the viewer.
I am a self-taught photographer. However, most recently I did take an artistic black and white photography class via Zoom. This class was offered by PhotoMidwest which is a Madison based, non-profit, member-driven association of photographers. I am currently a member of this group and many of my most recent black and white photographs were influenced by the class in which I was enrolled. My photos are sometimes shown on their Facebook page.
Although I was very interested in photography in my early to mid-twenties, as a retiree I now have much more time to pursue photography more seriously.
Artist Statement
My intention when taking photographs is to create something unusual. I look for visuals that are out of the ordinary. I also enjoy making ordinary photos extraordinary through post processing. My purpose is to create photographs that will stand out and draw the attention of the viewer.
I create my work using a variety of digital cameras and several post processing software programs.
Much of my work is done in black and white as it is my belief that it allows for greater contrast, especially when I am adjusting or changing these photographs via post processing. In my opinion, black and white photography allows for greater energy.
Sometimes I want my photographs to tell a story. The story can be of contemplation or happiness, or horrors of war. However, the intent of all my photographs is to fire up the imagination of each viewer. That each viewer sees and feels what I do when I take an image and bend it to create a new experience that is more "beautiful" than the original.
